This is an anniversary course. Due to the fact that on December 10th of 2011 the world will celebrate the 63nd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this version of the course for the Fall of 2011 is focused on the intersection between Latin American literature / culture and human rights. We will study mainly the texts that appear in the anthology edited by Marjorie Agosin: Writing Toward Hope: The Literature of Human Rights in Latin America (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2006) [UGA booksore], in conjunction with films / videos and other forms of social, artistic and cultural expression. The course includes a necessary theoretical and historical assessment of Human Rights from its inception until today, also the participation of special guests who will explain certain aspects related to HRs in the region and globally. Finally we will discuss the possibility of new HRs that are not included in the official UN document of 1948, which eventually could be incorporated to it in the future.
